About
Hello! My name is Sachia Bailey, and I am an interdisciplinary artist working in paint, pencil, pastel, collage and fabric.
I have always been drawn to bright colors, patterns, architecture, design, fashion and fabric. When I was little, I learned how to knit and sew from my paternal grandmother, who was an expert seamstress and quilt maker. From my maternal grandmother, I inherited I love for animals, nature, and play.
My work today reflects approaches I learned from both of my grandmothers.
I begin with a set of constraints: One 2.5 inch square on paper, for example, measured precisely, the way a seamstress outlines a pattern. Once that boundary is set, I tap into a state of improvisation, flow and play— allowing inspiration, memory and random chance to guide the pencil on the page.
What emerges is an amalgamation of patterns and motifs I have seen or imagined throughout my life, drawn in colors I have admired, pined after, or that made me feel something. The result is a vibrant glimpse into another world—or perhaps a glimpse into our own world, in which patterns emerge and disintegrate; seem accidental or intentional, random or divine, harmonious or cacophonous—but are always present, in one way or another.
